As I was planning out the year of missions, I decided to declutter the laundry room BEFORE we decluttered our bedrooms. This will ensure that your clothes are in the proper closet before you begin working in the closets.
First things first, put away any clothes that are ready to be put away. Whether they are hanging clothes or socks that are stacked on the dryer, move them to their appropriate closet or dresser.
What else do you keep on top of your washer and dryer? Maybe you have things that need to be repaired like something with a missing button or a hem that needs to be redone. Plan some time this week and take care of those projects.
Do you dump mail here? What about shoes? Pet toys? Pet food? Decide if this is the best room for these items. We will discuss mail later this year. If this is the best space for your items, that is great. Be sure you have a basket or container for those items. Let’s not make the top of the washer and dryer a dumping ground. Keeping those appliances clear makes the whole room feel less cluttered.
Maybe you keep cleaning supplies here. Go through them and get rid of anything you no longer use. Maybe you keep first aid supplies or even sunscreen or outdoor items here. Check expiration dates and make sure you are making the best use of the space.
In the end, it doesn’t matter what you store in a space as long as it is working for you and your family. The main thing is to make sure every item in your house has a home. This is the first step to decluttering your home and keeping it that way.
Until next week…
